Kayem Foods, Inc

Executive Summary Problem/Issues Matt Monkiewicz, director of marketing for Kayem Foods, Inc. , is challenged with a decision pertaining to a small but fast growing product, Al Fresco chicken sausage. The product has become a brand leader in its market niche, and means on how to promote the product is in question. A â€Å"buzz† marketing campaign was recently used, and while the company did increase in sales, there is no way to directly calculate the effect the campaign had on the product. Mr. Monkiewicz would like to continue to use the â€Å"buzz† marketing approach, but supermarket executives and food distributers are unwilling to increase buying and support for the brand. They do not believe that this small marketing campaign is solid enough to increase buyer recognition and increase sales. Customers have remarked that the product is hard to find in stores, and some cannot find it entirely and have to visit other locations. Analysis The sausage market, while growing, has several competitors who dominate the market. Al Fresco chicken sausage has become the number one brand in its market niche, but buyer power is high due to the low price and similarity of the product. Kayem Foods Inc has primarily sold through supermarkets and other retail food stores in the Northeast. In the last two years, it had made a concerted effort to obtain distribution in the Midwest and the Southeast. Kayem has two different communication needs. First, they need to convince retailers that their product has a stable top of the market demand, and that current pricing creates a large profit potential. This objective can be achieved by devoting money to print advertisements in food magazines, and by allocating money to trade advertisements which depict the success the company has currently seen with the Al Fresco product Monkiewicz used Al Fresco’s high recent sales increases to secure an $185,000 advertising budget for FY 2006. His perceived marketing options include spending $75-72,000 on another Buzz campaign, which supermarket executives do not believe is an adequate marketing campaign for the product. Another possibility is running trade advertisements to entice more retailers to sell Fresco’s chicken sausage (minimum cost of $80,000). The company has evaluated the possibility running no less than 2 or 3 print ads in specialty food magazines; this would be a cheap way to get circulation to the target market. A final alternative would distribute consumer price-off coupons at a minimum cost of $90,000. On top of the advertising venues chosen, an informative website that provided, product history, flavors, recipes, and product locations would be beneficial Recommendations Kayem Foods, Inc. should use the budgeted $185,000 promotional dollars to run a series of â€Å"trade advertisements† that would cost $80,000. They should also run two ads in both Food and Wine and Cooking Light food specialty magazines which would cost $39,765 and $57,840 and would be seen by 5. 4 million people. They should also launch an informational website that would help build product awareness. Use of these three advertising avenues helps resolve the problems the Al Fresco brand currently faces; a new, largely unknown brand to consumers, supermarket managers have been reluctant to offer the brand considerable, if any shelf space due to doubts of stable demand. Problems/Issues Matt Monkiewicz, director of marketing for Kayem Foods, Inc. , is challenged with a decision pertaining to a small but fast growing product, Al Fresco chicken sausage. This product, though small, has become the number-one brand in its niche market. The company had recently implemented a â€Å"buzz† marketing campaign for the product. This is a unique technique for using a word-of-mouth advertising venue. Monkiewicz did not initially have a substantial marketing budget adequate enough to make a substantial impact using traditional media. â€Å"Buzz† marketing, gave him means to promote the rand on a small budget but still have an impact on his target market. According to ACNielsen, Al Fresco had become the number one-selling branded chicken sausage in the United States by late July 2004. However, it was not clear whether this was due to the buzz campaign or to other marketing activities implemented by the firm. Prior to the campaign, the brand had developed substantial m omentum with a minimum of advertising support. Also, during the campaign period the sales force had made a special effort and offered special discounts and allowances to obtain new distribution. The sales increase by the brand was very impressive, but it was not clear how much more growth Kayem could expect from this rather unusual marketing tactic. Monkiewicz explained that it would be a challenge to sustain the growth and increase market share with such a limited marketing budget. Even with substantial growth of the product, the company has continued problems with supermarket executives and food distributers still unwilling to increase buying and support for the brand. They do not believe that this small marketing campaign is solid enough to increase buyer recognition and increase sales. This placed a major dilemma for Kayem Foods, and Al Fresco. They would like to continue to use the â€Å"buzz† marketing approach, but there is no way to justify and link the increase in sales with the campaign. The big issue now is getting supermarket executives and distributers to be confident with the product to increase shelf space and brand recognition. This is very important because seventy-two percent of the BzzAgents reported that they had had difficulty finding the product in the supermarket. This meant that they had to either ask the store manager for the product or go to a different store. Twenty-three percent were never able to find the product. Monkiewicz has two weeks to decide how to implement an upcoming market strategy for the product. He would like to implement another â€Å"buzz† marketing campaign in 2005, but since this strategy is not wielded well by supermarket executives, he has to look at other venues. Some alternatives he could look to with the advertising budget include; limited magazine advertising, consumer coupons, or more point-of-purchase material. Monkiewicz has also considered an advertising campaign in supermarket trade magazines aimed at retail food buyers and merchandising executives. Situation Analysis 5 Forces Upon reviewing the five forces model for Al Fresco, it is noted that competition is pretty high in the industry. Total category sales for the chicken sausage segment were about $75 million per year. The market is growing at about 12 percent a year. This is a growing market, with a few large brands, and rivalry is high. Al Fresco possesses a small 5. 3 percent of the market in the New England area. Because the chicken sausage category is small, it is difficult to obtain many specifics about competition. Buyer power is moderate to high, due to the fact of low switching cost and ease of access to the product. Buyers can be brand loyal, which is a benefit to some companies in the industry. Tying in with the high buyer power is a high power of substitutes. Consumers on average spend $16. 95 annually per year in the target market, when compared to the food industry is not very much. The sausage market can be seasonal, with price promotions and coupon discounts during these periods can be very high. This can lead to shelf space being a big factor, because if a consumer cannot find their desired product, they can easily purchase a similar product for a similar price. Barrier to entry is low in the market due to the fact of establishing a high quality product at a reasonable price with good shelf space and advertising. Supplier power is also low due to the fact that the low priced products in the industry are located in all major grocery stores. S. W. O. T. Strengths In 1999 Kayem introduced the Al Fresco brand. The firm believed if they could have a well-recognized â€Å"demand brand,† it could potentially obtain higher prices and better margins and open doors in new markets. By late July 2004, Al Fresco had become the number one-selling branded chicken sausage in the United States. The product was offered with high quality, healthy attributes, freshness, and distinctive flavors. Al Fresco chicken sausage has 75 percent less fat than traditional pork sausage and is available in seven flavors. Sales have increased significantly for Al Fresco chicken sausage. In September of 2003 they posted sales of $197,000 and in October of 2004 that number rose to $575,000. Weaknesses Though Al Fresco has been prosperous in recent years, Kayem’s profit margins have been eroding. Gross margin for the company had been declining for several years due to supermarkets gaining â€Å"power† through consolidation and demands for greater discounts and promotional allowances from suppliers. With this, Al Fresco has been asked for more price- oriented promotions. This could be a possible benefit for the company, but would cost about $90,000 to be effective. The target market for Al Fresco chicken sausage is the 25- to 54-year-old woman who was health conscious. This is a good niche market, but it makes Al Fresco cater to this niche instead of advertising to an entire population. Opportunities Kayem Foods Inc has primarily sold through supermarkets and other retail food stores in the Northeast. In the last two years, it had made a concerted effort to obtain distribution in the Midwest and the Southeast. This market expansion could lead to vast growth for the company if it takes hold of market share in these regions. The chicken sausage segment is small, with category sales about $75 million per year, but the market is growing at about 12 percent a year. With the new prospective advertising campaign, Al Fresco has potential to capture additional market share. Since sales of Al Fresco had been increasing significantly, the advertising budget was increased to $185,000 for fiscal year 2006 (March 1, 2005-February 28, 2006). This allows Monkiewicz with new possibilities for advertising and reaching a broader customer base. The company should use this to increase demand from supermarket executives, to provide better shelf space for the product. Monkiewicz would like to continue to use the â€Å"buzz† marketing campaign. Rob Walker wrote an article in the New York Times, explaining how effective this campaign was. Appendix) One agent related. †I told everyone that they were low in fat and so much better than pork sausages. †Ã‚  The article relates how effective â€Å"word of mouth† advertising can be. Threats Al Fresco has faced a few problems along the way. During their â€Å"buzz† marketing campaign, seventy-two percent of the agents reported that they had had difficulty finding the product, while twenty-three percent were never able to find the product. This is unacceptable in the marketplace and Al Fresco must convince the supermarkets to carry the product, and give it adequate shelf space. Though Monkiewicz liked the â€Å"buzz† campaign, it was hard to track and justify just how effective an advertising campaign it was. This is threatening, because supermarket executives are timid to demand the product if this is the only kind of advertising the company partakes in. Sausage Market Consumers of sausage products spanned all national regions and income levels. Accordingly, the sausage products where used for both main entree’s and complements to other center-plate dishes for all three main meals of a day. Retail sales of all sausages tallied $2. billion in 2003. This total includes Al Fresco’s product segment, specialty sausage, which had a 20%, or $4. 8 million in sales, and was currently the fastest growing segment. Increased sales were linked with a shift in consumer preference for differentiated products that added a variety to their menus, or were lower in fat content. Concurrently, Al Fresco’s chicken sausage was part of a market segment of low-fat/lean sausages which made up 19% of all sausage sales. Communication strategy Kayem has two different communication needs. First, they need to convince etailers that their product has a stable top of the market demand, and that current pricing creates a large profit potential. This objective can be achieved by devoting money to print advertisements in food magazines, and by allocating money to trade advertisements which depict the success the company has currently seen with the Al Fresco product. Ads in food magazines will also help achieve the second communication goal, stimulating primary demand in consumers, by introducing them to not only a new product segment, but the most popular product in that market. Supermarket executives have recommended that Kayem advertise in specialty food magazines. Through this type of method consumers should be encouraged to deepen brand loyalty. Due to the niche market of chicken sausage, consumers may not need a sales promotion as often as in larger, saturated market segments. Running advertisements in specialty magazines allows a company to easily target desired geographic and demographic segments. Magazine ads are thought to have both high credibility and prestige. Plus, this method of marketing has a longer life span than many other mediums (TV, radio, telephone). In essence, though Kayem would be out the entire expense of running advertisements in the current fiscal year, sales spurred by these investments may be realized in months or even years to come. Out of the possible types of advertising goals, the persuasive approach is most in line with both Kayem’s marketing goals and the potential customers reading cuisine magazines. The company can create liking, preference, and conviction for readers to buy their sausage by highlighting its flavor, freshness, and more importantly healthy composition in comparison to other sausage alternatives. They currently have very low brand awareness which could be alleviated with vast advertising campaigns. This method also works best when consumers are processing the advertisement in a detailed, analytical mode. This description fully fits the reader of a food magazine who is seeking new recipes and/or foods. Point-of-purchase (P-O-P) communication is not the most effective use of Kayem’s promotional money at this time. The company’s current dilemma involves convincing more retailers to buy/stock their item on shelves. This problem should be tackled before the same retailers are asked about in-store promotions. Analysis of Alternatives Monkiewicz used Al Fresco’s high recent sales increases to secure an $185,000 advertising budget for FY 2006. His perceived marketing options include spending $75-72,000 on another Buzz campaign, running trade advertisements to entice more retailers to sell Fresco’s chicken sausage (minimum cost of $80,000), running no less than 2 or 3 print ads in specialty food magazines, and distributing consumer price-off coupons at a minimum cost of $90,000. Monkiewicz must decide if BzzAgent’s previous campaign generated enough sales to warrant spending an additional $75,000 on a second campaign in FY 2006. Due to other promotional activities that occurred simultaneously with the first campaign he is unable to determine how many incremental sales the program created. Kayem’s own sales representatives claimed that they were unable to get additional placements or expanded shelf space due to the buzz campaign alone. The cost per â€Å"buzz† (conversation/ activity involving Al Fresco) was calculated to be almost $4. 24. The new campaign would have a unit breakeven of 62,500 packages. While this advertising approach does disseminate relevant literature there remains no clear way to track generated sales. Growing negative market sentiments of BzzAgent’s techniques may also hurt the image of the company if consumers become aware that they use this form of advertising. Another drawback is the fact that Kayem must rely on unpaid employees of another firm to handle their promotions. A second option costing at least $80,000, involves Kayem running a series of â€Å"trade advertisements† directed at convincing retailers that their chicken sausage is in high demand and can be sold with high profit margins. This alternative has a unit breakeven of 66,667 units. Although past efforts have lacked the intended success, Kayem must address the limited availability of their product. Producing the leading brand of a product in a market segment which has quickly expanded gives them better financial support when approaching retailers than before. The option of distributing consumer price-off coupons was mentioned by both Al Fresco’s sales force and certain supermarket managers. The supermarket managers would still receive full retail selling price, but the Kayem would be cutting their profit margin on each package bought with a coupon. The unit breakeven of this promotion would be 75,000 packages. The product is competitively priced with other chicken sausage products according to a survey of the Boston-area supermarkets. Another draw-back to offering price reductions is in conflicts with Kayem’s desire to keep margins high to off-set their lower profit lines. A final promotional route Kayem could choose involves running advertisements in specialty food magazines. This approach covers a large geographic area, connects to the targeted demographic profile, and has a longer life than most of media avenues. Various costs for ads covering a full, half, or quarter of a page for three different magazines is accompanied by number of circulations in the appendix. Kayem’s managers believe that no fewer than 2 or 3 ads would be needed to have any positive effect on sales. There are many new opportunities opening in the advertising venue for Al Fresco due to the increased budget. Two big issues the company faces are product awareness, and knowledge of where the product is available for purchase. With the Internet becoming more and more common place, a simple website would be a possible alternative for Al Fresco. The site would offer history of the product, types of product, recipes to go with the sausage, and locations were the sausage may be purchased. Any advertising that is done; the name of the website could be placed on the advertisement. It is assumed that a start up fee cost for a simple informative website would be $4,000 and yearly upkeep would be an additional $3,000. Recommendations/Implementation Kayem Foods, Inc. should use the budgeted 185,000 promotional dollars to run a series of â€Å"trade advertisements†, 2 ads in both Food and Wine and Cooking Light food specialty magazines, and launch an informative website. Use of these three advertising avenues helps resolve the problems the Al Fresco brand currently faces; a new, largely unknown brand to consumers, supermarket managers have been reluctant to offer the brand considerable, if any shelf space due to doubts of stable demand. Due to budget constraints, the placement of two 1/4 four-color advertisements in both food specialty magazines is the cheapest way to increase broad brand awareness in the target market. An estimated 5. 2 million ads will be circulated at an estimated cost of $18. 7 per 1,000 viewers. This is by far a cheaper avenue to reach potential customers than another â€Å"buzz† campaign (appendix). The ads should highlight the freshness and natural, healthy composition of Al Fresco’s chicken sausage, and should include the statements, â€Å"#1 Selling, Healthy, All-Natural Choice† and â€Å"Ask for It at Your Local Supermarket†. Thes e advertisements will not only increase selective demand, an approach that attempts to highlight a specific brand’s competitive advantage in the face of many substitutions, but will also spur a deepening in brand loyalty. By using a persuasive advertising approach these placements will lead to higher preference, liking, and conviction of Al Fresco’s chicken sausage flavors by consumers because they will be processing the ads in a detailed, analytical mode. Placing these ads in food magazines gives Kayem the opportunity to place their product in the minds of consumers actively searching for new products/ recipes, thus initiating new sales from experimenting, health conscience, or even allergenic consumers. Secondly, supermarket executives have said such an advertisement campaign is needed to create the stable demand required to prompt initial purchases and shelving of Al Fresco’s chicken sausage. Increasing the pressure on retailers to adopt and sell Al Fresco’s products can be supplemented by running a series of â€Å"trade advertisements†. These ads will highlight the specialty and low-fat sausage market segment’s growing sales numbers, and Al Fresco’s personal commitment to faithfully market their products. High profit margins and placement at the top of the segment market are also key points that must be received by retailing executives. As mentioned by Monkiewicz, $80,000 will be needed to successfully implement this advertising campaign. The remaining budget dollars will be used to launch and maintain an informational website specifically aimed at providing product awareness to customers. In today’s day and age, the internet is becoming more resourceful. With Al Fresco’s increased advertising over the next year, they can add they website URL to the ads for free publicity to the website. The website would be simple, offering product history, flavors and recipes, and locations were the product is available. Consider how Jane Austen Portrays Marriage in Pride and Prejudice Essay

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of good fortune must be in want of a wife.’ The fact that Austen opens Pride and Prejudice with this sentence is evident that the theme is going to be important. Also it holds a truth as well as being satirical and humorous. As a beginning sentence, we know that this idea of marriage will be expanded later on and become more important as the novel commences. Austen fills the novel’s dialogue with irony, making people such as Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Collins reveal their foolishness to the reader through their ridiculous comments. Pride and Prejudice is a love story that is both humorous and deeply serious. It shows a mixture of emotions on all the characters behalf. Satire is used a great deal, where Austen criticises people in a humorous way. This is due to the fact that for a woman in this period, marriage was the surest route to independence and freedom. The story is based on a series of conflicts, the central one is between Elizabeth and Darcy, and smaller ones concerning the other characters. Jane Austen portrays marriage in Pride and Prejudice in various ways. The first idea is true and deep love, and that they would want to be together forever regardless of money or social class. This reason alone should be why the couple marry. Another idea would be money, people may have chosen to marry due each other having a substantial amount of money or land. Some marriages may be very passionate or in contrast they could be quite forced. All the marriages in the novel vary as they are all slightly different under different circumstances. Austen chooses to portray the Bennet’s marriage mainly by Elizabeth’s thoughts and opinions. Their marriage is rather different to any others. Mr. Bennet proposed when Mrs Bennet was rather young. This meant she was naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve and not thinking about the consequences fully. Elizabeth’s father chose to marry her mother because he was ‘captivated by her youth and beauty’. The older the couple became, the more they argued. ‘You mistake me my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these twenty years at least.’ This shows us that they have been together for at least twenty years and they still argue with each other. In addition, it shows that she uses ridicule. Mr. Bennet puts up with Mrs Bennet even though she may become annoyed by little things. Mrs Bennet has an uncertain temper and when she was discontented, she became really nervous. As she became more and more nervous, she took out her nerves and anger on her husband. Due to this and other reasons, Mr. Bennet discovered that she has a ‘weak understanding and illiberal mind.’ Mrs Bennet is desperate for all of her daughters to get married and settle down with a family, ‘Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; favour five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!’ whereas Mr. Bennet is not as bothered whether they do get married or stay single for the rest of their lives. Austen uses this marriage to represent how not all marriages work out perfectly, and that sometimes there are arguments. Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins married for a reason that Austen does not agree with. They both married for convenience, practicality and to achieve a desired social rank. Charlotte wanted to settle down in a ‘comfortable home’, and Mr. Collins wanted to ‘set an example of matrimony in his parish’ and ‘add very greatly to my happiness’. Collins also wanted to follow the ‘recommendation of the very noble lady whom I have the honour of calling Patroness’. Mr. Collins had a fair amount of money, so Lady and Sir Lucas did not disapprove of their daughter’s marriage. Charlotte married to solidify her life as she was twenty-seven and way beyond the marrying age. Soon she regretted it as she spent most her time trying to avoid her husband. This is unmistakeably obvious that this marriage should not have taken place. Charlotte and Collins so not have any feelings for each other, but both feel as if they have achieved something as they are settled down with some fortune. As Austen uses her writing techniques throughout the novel, Collins was described in a very burlesque way, this was due to his exaggerated behaviour. Lydia and Wickham got married even though they each had different opinions on the subject. Lydia had rushed into an ill-advised romance with Wickham, an officer who at first appears charming and trustworthy. ‘His appearance was greatly in his favour, he had all the best part of beauty – a fine countenance, a good figure, and very pleasing address.’ Another benefit would have been that he became socially named. Lydia wanted marriage to be the answer as she believed that they were meant to be with each other and that he loved her in return. Little did she know that Wickham had no intention of marrying her, but when he finally did decide to, he only took into consideration how much money the Bennet’s owned to find out how much he would make. Lydia did not see or understand that Wickham did not love her and did not intend on marriage. Everyone in Lydia’s family thought that she was stupid and foolish accepting Wickham’s proposal as they could see how untrustworthy he was. They also all knew that he was forced into it by Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy also felt responsible as he new what Wickham was like, but failed to warn anyone even though he knew the consequences would end in marriage. Darcy forced Wickham to marry for the reason that he wanted to help out Elizabeth as he had feelings towards her and he thought that doing this would make her love him. When Lydia went on her trip to Brighton, she saw this as an opportunity to become friends with male officers. ‘She saw herself the object of attention to tons and to scores of them at present unknown.’ After the two married, the Bennet’s welcomed Wickham into their family more freely, even if they didn’t mean it and they were just acting warmly towards him. Elizabeth could not bear to listen to the conversation the family were having about the couple. She heard Lydia telling Jane that she had taken her place in rank order, and this distressed her. ‘Ah! Jane, I take your place now, and you must go lower, because I am a married woman.’ This tells us that Lydia is very pleased that she is the first of all her sisters to get married, and she wants to boast about it and let everyone know. Overall, Austen portrays this marriage as a bad one, due to the circumstances. Later on she begins to change her mind, as Wickham seems to end up wanting Lydia for love, regardless of the past. Austen strongly agreed with Jane and Bingley’s marriage, as they married for love and it had nothing to do with money or land. They liked each other from the beginning, and kept it that way. I also agree that this marriage was the most suitable given that they grew to love each other before they fully found out each others history. Jane is the eldest of the five daughters, and also considered the prettiest of them. ‘†You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,† said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet.’ Darcy along with Elizabeth and Bingley all seem to think that Jane is far prettier than any other of the girls in the ball room at the ball. Mr. Bennet thinks that Jane and Bingley will get cheated out of their money and become poor as they are too kind to their servants. ‘So easy, that every servant will cheat you; and so generous, that you will exceed your income.’ Although, Mr. Bennet did say that Jane and Bingley will be happy together as they married for love and they both truly love each other. Mrs. Bennet on the other hand, is just very pleased that Jane is married and especially happy that it is to someone that earns a great deal of money each year. ‘Why, he has four or five thousand a year, and very likely more.’ In the beginning when Elizabeth and Darcy first met, Elizabeth despised Darcy due to his inexcusable manners, and him refusing to dance with anybody, including herself. At the ball, Darcy thought that Elizabeth was ‘not pretty enough to be worthy of dancing with.’ Mrs Bennet had described him as ‘a disagreeable man.’ After the Ball, Darcy changes his opinion about Elizabeth ‘he was forced to acknowledge her figure to be light and pleasing.’ At this stage, Elizabeth was unaware of Darcy’s feelings towards her. Further in the novel, Darcy fears he is in ‘some danger’ of falling in love with her. The reader then realises that they might have some kind of future together. Soon Elizabeth starts to fall in love with Wickham, the handsome soldier. This is due to Darcy not mentioning how he feels and that Elizabeth knows no better. Later on, Darcy did not give Wickham the parish that he wanted and had been promised before Darcy’s father passed away. This is when Darcy wrote the letter to Elizabeth telling her about all about his and Wickham’s conversations. He told her all about how Wickham wanted to go to Law School, and then when he didn’t like law school he wanted the Parish again. Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy’s Aunt, strongly disagrees to the fact that Darcy likes and would like to marry Elizabeth. She believes that as he has much more money, he should marry somebody from a higher social class than Elizabeth. Elizabeth definitely is not bothered about what she has to contribute towards the matter as she considers this to be between Darcy and herself only. ‘You are not entitled to know mine; nor will such behaviour as this, ever induce me to be explicit’. This is Elizabeth’s reply to Lady Catherine when Elizabeth denies telling her what she knows about her and Darcy. Towards the end of the novel, Darcy asks Elizabeth about her feelings towards him, she said she had changed her mind and that she does like him now. Elizabeth and Darcy then get married as they both feel the same way towards each other. This marriage is portrayed as a perfect marriage as they both married for the reason that they each love one another. I agree with this marriage, as they each fell for one another at the end, after all their ups and downs and one marriage proposal. Furthermore, these two have been through many different emotions of anger, stress, sadness and then to happiness until they were both ecstatic by being with each other. I have come to the conclusion that Austen portrays marrying for love and security as the right reason and is the decent way of doing things. We find this out because any marriage that she sees is good she goes into great detail about and explains everything that is going on, however if she disagrees with a marriage she will explain it quickly and try to finish on the subject rapidly. When Austen disapproves of a character, she views them negatively and does not inform the audience of any positive attributes. Overall I have decided that the best marriage throughout the novel was undoubtedly Darcy and Elizabeth as they married for all the right reasons. They were also the central theme so were meant to be together and work out in the end.

Critical Self-Reflection Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Critical Self-Reflection - Essay Example It entails adopting a rational, reasonable and ethical perspective of viewing different problems and situations. Regular critical thinking is critical because the natural human thinking process exhibits numerous flaws. Therefore, critical thinking serves as a check for eliminating such laws from the thinking process. Critical thinking must rely on powerful intellectual tools, especially the consideration of concepts and principles. Critical thinking has the potential to develop intellectual traits such as intellectual humility, integrity, sense of justice as well as confidence in reason. Notably, there is always a need for an individual to adopt a higher form of thinking because of the human susceptibility to mistakes and bias. This paper will present a self-reflection on different aspects of critical thinking. Evidently, there are numerous benefits of engaging in critical thinking. Some of the roles of critical thinking bring forth invaluable benefits to an individual. Through critical thinking, it is possible for an individual to identify bias and eliminate it successfully. Moreover, critical thinkers have the potential to recognize logical connections that define ideas and concepts. Moreover, critical thinking is significant when identifying inconsistencies in reasoning. Since critical thinking involves an active process of analyzing a problem, considering the potential solutions, and determine the best solutions, it enables the individual to analyze problems systematically (Riddell, 2007). In a world whereby individuals have an evident need to acquire knowledge, critical thinking can help in the identification of relevance and importance of ideas. I have realized that all human beings have certain stringent belief systems, which serve as barriers of critical thinking. I have the convic tion that critical thinking can play a significant role in assessing the believe systems. Without doubt, critical thinking an important aspect in an individual’s life.

The History of Relationship between the Women and the Unions Research Paper

The History of Relationship between the Women and the Unions - Research Paper Example Historical researchers indicate that the U.S has always witnessed the tumultuous relationship between women and unions. Kessler –Harris termed the unions to be ‘agents of social closure.’ Studies by Kessler – Harris show that the unions were indifferent towards working women. Kessler – Harris says that unionists considered this available ‘nimble and cheap’ women labor as competition. Women were considered as a weak link in the labor movement as they were a part of unskilled workers and were looked upon. Unionist’s considered women a threat as they thought that the women would not be able to represent men in the union. A study by Brenner and Rams suggests that wages and graduation at work were the two aspects which made the unions exclude the women from being a part of it. As said earlier women were a part of unskilled labor and worked at a very low rate as compared to the men. So including the women into the unions meant the decli ne in the wages as well as degradation of the work which threatened the economic position of the working men. The historical, as well as the sociological literature, suggests that the relationship between the women and the unions was particularly strained because of the dual nature of the unions: commitment to small-scale bread-and-butter gains on one hand and working women own reliance on their status as different on the other. As per the studies of Kessler – Harries, women presented themselves as a â€Å"weaker† sex to obtain protective laws for short hours, better pay and better working conditions. It was particularly after World War I that the trade unions started believing that for their own economic gains they need to create â€Å"unified† front which meant women were in direct competition with the men for jobs. But however, they were conveniently excluded from the union memberships. But this did not stop women from unionizing. Women unionized in the femal e dominant trades like garment but again did not hold any position of leadership.

Religious Charities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Religious Charities - Essay Example For instance, pro-choice groups use community backing, legal action and public education in protecting the woman’s choice to manage her reproductive choice while anti-choice, especially religious charities, use the same to discourage abortion because of their sacred and moral values. However, the presence of these civic organizations is viewed as fundamental to success of a democratic system (Berry & Jeffrey, 2005). There are deep controversies over values played out in the nonprofit sector around religious beliefs, personal responsibility and individual right, as well as the separation of the state and the church. On the other hand, the impact of religious charities in society is profound and long-term. Religious charities provide the spiritual needs of members and protect the religious dogma and ideals. Social, as well as health services, crises care, and advocacy activities, child care, as well as psychotherapy, are all services provided by religious charities. In addition, they impact on civic skills to their followers who learn to classify and join forces for common ends; for instance, voting in a certain direction. In the U.S., there has existed continuing debate on the disjointing of church and the state (Ehrlich & Clotfelter, 1999). Most religious entities fall outside the government regulatory framework for nonprofit organizations; they are exempted from tax deductions on contributions. This has raised a debate over the actual impact of separating religion and state. Traditionally, religious entities, as long as they offered services under government contracts, used to be free to monitor and supervise, unlike secular entities (Boris & Eugene, 2006). As religious leaders advanced charitable choices, it turned out that increased government revenue was accompanied by government demand for accountability and compliance with the laid down standards. They realized that

Is the statement ''Good record-keeping shows good clinical care'' true Assignment

Is the statement ''Good record-keeping shows good clinical care'' true Discuss - Assignment Example A good clinical record should include: (1) pertinent information of the patients’ medical history, including important negatives; (2) examination results, including important negatives; (3) differential diagnosis; (4) details of any laboratory exams ordered, and any treatment provided; (5) patients’ progress report; (6) follow-up schedules; (7) information shared with or discussed to the patient, such as associated complications of a treatment; and (8) patients’ non-compliance of the treatment (Medical Protection Society [MPS], 2011). This should be written objectively, clearly and legibly; with the name and signature of the medical practitioner; as well as the date and time of examination affixed after the report (MPS, 2011). Clinical records are part and parcel of patient care, which ensures the safe delivery of health care, as well as positive patient outcomes. Medical records are the basis for establishing a high quality of patient care (Ram & Carpenter, 2007 ). It is a vital tool that allow medical practitioners to understand; learn from; and correct errors made in the past (Ram & Carpenter, 2007). ... A detailed account of patient complaints help medical practitioners focus treatment plan and care provision on the problem presented; and on its associated complication. It provides a list of objective manifestation that form the basis for the diagnosis; and it prevents deviation from the ideal course of treatment. By setting out on a treatment course designed for the patient, unnecessary tests, medications, procedures, as well as expenses can be dodged; and a focused plan of care can be applied. According to Blake (2010), â€Å"good record-keeping will assist the member in accurately recalling the starting point with the client, the agreed-upon goals and process, and evaluating the extent to which the goals have been achieved† (p.15). Information contained in medical records serve as a basement data with which present, and future assessment findings can be compared with. This aids the health providers in deciding; in planning; and in evaluating the treatment regimen and other interventions for the patient. Documenting assessment findings, outcome interventions, and other observed manifestations, can help medical practitioners monitor the progress of patient care; and identify, as well as prevent possible adverse effects resulting from the treatments employed. In a study by Pomeranz (n.d) on deaths caused by medication errors, he emphasized that â€Å"...better awareness can help prevent some of the deaths [caused by adverse medication reactions;]...and better record keeping can help prevent patients’ being given drugs that they have had allergic reactions to in the past...† (as cited in Grady, 1998, n. pag.). Pertinent information that can affect

Providing Services for Human Sexuality and Well-being Essay

Providing Services for Human Sexuality and Well-being - Essay Example The most evident means in integrating an individual's sexuality is through their actual gender (Molina, 1999). Being a male or a female could already totally affect one's sexuality. Men and women are different in so many ways even from the smallest aspects to the most salient features - males and females walk, stand and sit differently from one another, both also have their own definite way in looking at something, both will have different opinions about a certain matter, both think in a very distinctive way. Nonetheless, one does not have to go into the psychological details of being a male or a female since physically, the two genders already show numerous differences, from the shape of the face to their body structure as a whole. This aspect of differences is explained by a branch of science called biology - it explains about sexual differentiation, sexual response and sex hormones. It is through sexual differentiation that not only the outer physical attributes of male and female differ but also their sexual reproduction (Bancroft, 2002). Gender is determined in this area, the X and Y chromosomes are the designated determinants of what a male or a female is (an XY chromosome suggests a male while and XX chromosome implies a female). Based on this biological sexual differentiation, the majority of the society only has two rooms form gender identity and that is for a boy and for a girl, unfortunately, it is not always that sexual differentiation and chromosome development produce what is considered as right, correct and acceptable. There have been various cases of intersex or also known as hermaphroditism which is labeled as a â€Å"sexual disorder† and â€Å"chromosome anomaly† (Fallon, Jr., 200 2).... There have been various cases of intersex or also known as hermaphroditism which is labeled as a "sexual disorder" and "chromosome anomaly" (Fallon, Jr., 2002). Consequently, sexual response referred to the sexual arousal and changes in the body physiologically (Bancroft, 2002). It is also referred to as a psychosomatic circle in which changes that occur in the genitalia affect the processes of the central brain procedures. What is sexual is different among people as what is sexual for one will not be sexual for the other; it depends on the experiences that the person has undergone or the culture that he has lived in and has been accustomed to (Bancroft, 2002). Sexual response is considered as a cognitive activity where it is both a perception and an evaluation (Walen & Roth, 1987, as cited by Molina, 1999). As a perception, it has three basic essentials which are detection - which refers to the capability of the person in identifying stimulus and differentiating it from the other of its type, labeling - which pertains to the categorizing of the stimulus occurrence by the person, and attribution - which refers to the overall articulated rationalization of the whole perception. The said three features could greatly affect the overall sexual performance of a person (Molina, 1999). Lastly, sex hormones is said to be important factor in influencing sexual behavior (Molina, 1999). The hormones that are being secreted by the different glands in the human body, it is solely responsible for why sexual differentiation exists. Male and female, though they are said to be producing the same hormones, differ in the amount of the hormones being produced. Thus, they are not the same - for example, males

Accounting for Leaders- Kitchen Utensils Limited Essay

Accounting for Leaders- Kitchen Utensils Limited - Essay Example Kitchen Utensils LTD faces a number of problems. First, the company is unable to recruit and maintain educated and quality employees. The business has also failed to develop a desirable working environment to develop right skill set (Catanach & Feldmann, 54). This is so because the sales staff that the company has in hand lacks basic accounting skills. Secondly, there is a lack of proper training programs for the employees (Harvard Business School, 98). The management only trains their employees when the need arise. From the case, it is evident that the management is reactive rather than being proactive. The seminar has only been organized as a result of declining sales volume. Thirdly, there is a lack of proper communication of objective (Brocke & Rosemann, 129). The management has failed to formulate a common goal for the different departments. The three-day conference is only organized when Paul discovered that the sales personnel cannot translate sales into profit. They are, therefore, not able to determine accounting profit. Another problem that the company faces is a lack of agreement. Instead of coming to a common conclusion, the lecture only caused consternation among the sales personnel. The sales personnel, in fact, felt frustrated after the lecture. The following strategies should be adopted by the company to address the above challenges. The company needs to provide their employees with a workplace where they feel supported and valued in order to attract decent candidates (Vandenbosch, 48). The management should develop an effective employee selection method in order to be able to find talented individuals with the necessary set of skills for the business. This will not only increase the performance of the company but will also reduce the training costs. Employee selection tools such as structured interviews, General Mental Ability and Situational Judgment Tests have been

Technical Architecture and Why Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Technical Architecture and Why - Assignment Example A distributed retailer is highly efficient because it does not rely on a hub site to provide most if not all of the services it needs. Moreover, all services are quick to respond to the in-store requests. Although hybrid and centralized system of technical architecture seem to be efficient in other businesses like shipping, a distributed system for a retail store is better because a retail store needs to track and identify behavioral trends in order to improve pricing and stocking. The proposed distributed operating system is essential in serving the various clients within the retail since it allows interactions of the various business activities through integration of machines within the network (Ray, 2009). A distributed DBMS is essential in providing functionality for the distributed system in order to facilitate the business processes for the retailer. Principles for technical architecture incorporate strategic and enterprise-wide goals that rely on specific environmental factors for the business (Greefhorst & Proper, 2011). Therefore, the proposed technical architecture for the retailer offers properties that are essential in meeting the retailer’s

Differential Association Theory Essay Example for Free

Differential Association Theory Essay 1. Differential Association theory would explain the burglar’s behavior by first looking at their social structure. Their social structure can affect everything; it can influence their close relationships, open them up to objective opportunities and could be seen as the main attribute that affects their learning process in behavior. A. Most of the people in these interviews are poor, young males with similar social structures. Growing up on the streets and in bad neighborhoods can influence the interactions that each of these people will have. These interactions can result in definitions favorable to crime because these people are beginning to surround themselves and interact with people who are already doing illegal actions. (Hagan, p.89). In the article it gave an example of how a group of friends may be doing coke and once it runs out someone in the group, that has developed their own belief in what’s right and what’s wrong, suggests doing burglary in order to get some money for more coke. A new person within the group may feel pressure in continuing in order to maintain their status and relationship with the members in the group. Here they are learning new attitudes and accepting new values that are favorable to crime (Hagan, p. 89). The behavior being learned is that burglary can help with any immediate needs and together they rebel against the law. The new member may now start to change what they believe is right and wrong and could begin acting in more frequent illegal actions. These burglars have the belief that burglary is okay because it is a matter of â€Å"day to day survival†. This shows that they have their own interpretation on what they think is right and wrong which is a learned definition favorable to crime. In the interview Wild Will proved this theory by describing that when he is in need of money he thinks to himself, â€Å"How do I know how to get money quick and easy?† He at one point had to have learned that an immediate fix to a bump in the road, which is justified in his mind, is to perform a burglary. Larry Harris would agree when he says that it is just something you have to do to get by. Neither of these men views burglary as something wrong but as something you do in order to survive. B. When it comes to the techniques that people learn in committing crime several burglars said that it is something that you just get better at over time. Wild Will stated that when he goes to rob a house he likes to stake out the house and call it in order to see if someone is home. This may have been a technique he had picked up from  someone else that he went and did a burglary with. Several participants in the interview confessed that if they had a friend that had a burglary set up that they would be willing to do it with them if given the offer. This is an incident where you could say that a person may have the opportunity to learned new strategies and techniques that have worked for someone else in the past. Another technique that gets learned on the streets is the ability to maintain and develop status. One of the participants shared that it is mandatory to be perceived as â€Å"hip†. People on the streets learn through interactions with each other what it takes to be hip and be seen as someone with high status. 95% of the participants confessed that they spend the money that they steal on things that give them the image of â€Å"high-living†. During the interview several things were revealed as things to do in order to gain that high status. These burglars can learn these techniques such as doing drugs, having sexual partners, the right styles and brands, and a car and car accessories, as things to pursue in order to gain that respected status in the street culture. C. It is already made clear that these burglars live in poor neighborhoods and are living on the streets which give them more objective opportunity than someone that is in a nicer well off neighborhood. Due to their neighborhood, it exposes these burglars to people that are promoters to committing crime (Hagan, p.90). Most of these men have also admitted that they are â€Å"too lazy† to maintain a real job so sources of income are limited within the household. Because of this most of these participants say that they are acting on illegal action, like burglaries, in order to gain money for food and clothing for their family. As for subjective opportunities not everyone would look at something as an opportunity to commit a crime but Larry William says it best in his interview when he is describing what he does when he is in need for money, â€Å"There it is! There’s the house†. He automatically looks for a target and sees it as an opportunity to immediately fix his problem whereas another person wouldn’t think of that as an option. Another subjective opportunity that these burglars have is the fact that their social bonds are also partaking in these acts and so they have multiple opportunities in performing a burglary when they are present with more opportunities given by their friends.

Environment Responsibility And Performance Of Unilever Corporation Environmental Sciences Essay

Environment Responsibility And Performance Of Unilever Corporation Environmental Sciences Essay Consumers today are progressively watchful and very particular with the social performance undertaken by all the large corporation on the behavior of the corporation conduct their operations. As we all know, social performance of a corporation is heavily stressed upon and the public have a high expectations on the companys corporate social performance (CSR). (Golob, Lah and Janccaroniccaron 2008) For an Anglo-Dutch multinational corporation like UNILEVER that owns many of the worlds consumer products brands in foods, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products also faces some consequences and some potential for the environment harm as their business operation. This assignment will be talking about the Corporate Social Responsibilities of Unilever and impacts in relation to the environment. On February 10, 2010 Unilever had been penalize and fined for $1.3 million by the California Air Resources Board for illegal consumer products sales between year 2006 and 2008. The Air Resources Board imposed a penalty on Unilever because of the fumes from the AXE Deodorant Bodyspray for men failed to meet the states clean air standard for volatile organic compounds (VOCs).(Unilever Axes Air Pollution) The deodorant spray had contaminated the air in California with the VOC used as a propellant. These emissions can cause ground-level- ozone or known as smog. When these emissions get in contact with the ozone, it can cause lungs irritation, lungs cancer, coughing and some other asthma symptoms. (Dimitri Stanich 2010) Till now almost 90% of the California citizens still breathe in unhealthy air. Other than that, on March 2001 Hindustan Unilever (HUL), a subsidiary of Unilever had been caught red-handed when the Greenpeace and Palni Hills Conservation Councils uncovered a dumpsite which contain 7.4 tonnes of mercury waste from Unilever thermometer factory. (Nityanand Jayaraman n.d.) These highly toxic mercury wastes had polluted several populated tourist resort of Kodaikanal. Besides that, HUL also dumped behind the factory wall onto the slopes which leads to the protected nature reserve of Pambar Shola. According to the data provided by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) approximately 1.3 tonnes of toxic mercury had already leaked into the Pambar Shola sanctuary over 17 years. (Indo-Asian News 2003) The soil on the factory premises had also been contaminated by another extra 366kg of toxic mercury. As we all know with a little amount of mercury, such as 1gram, which set down annually in a lake can contaminate the lake which is as big as 25 acres in long term. After t he mercury had been deposited for a extensive years, it will probably convert into a deadlier form from a toxic metal into methyl mercury and released into the environment. Any human being or animal which get in touch with the mercury will cause some severe disorder of the nervous system and also defects. (Nityanand Jayaraman n.d.) Unilever had always been the largest soap and detergent producers and also held huge number serious cases about water pollution offences. For example, Crosfield Chemicals -Unilever Chemical Factory in Warrington had been fined  £35000 because of leaking 50 tonnes of sulphuric acid into the sewage system during year 1990. (The Ethical Consumer Guide to Everyday Shopping n.d.) Also, in 1991, the Unilever Company was convicted for the water pollution offences by the River Purification Board. (Shashank Saxena 2009) Unilever factory was closed down for a period of three months because the contents of the sulphuric acids emission are above the World Health Organization(WHO ) limits. The case for Unilever Unilever is the first Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Company who takes up and implements paper sourcing policy in order to achieve the sustainability goals. This means that the company is trying to source all its products by using the materials which recycled and sources from a sustainably managed forest within a specific time frame. (Anne Marie Mohan 2010) Sustainable paper and board packaging sourcing policy are one of the Unilevers main aim to increase and maximize the company business in the mean time trying to help the environment by reduce the impacts. Unilever is trying to approach with its suppliers to source 75% of its paper and board packaging from materials which are recycled or from forest which are well managed by year 2015; Unilever also try to push it to 100% by year 2020. (Raz Godelnik 2010) The company also delivered a preference to the Forest Stewardship Council certified which requirement for paper from virgin sources. Unilever will also accepts international sc hemes as long as it is under the framework of International Management Citification standards and they must follow the strictly the policy. Unilever it trying to gain awareness of the consumers and public that they are promoting a development of certified forest in the world. All the suppliers which pass through the scheme will appear on the packaging of Unilevers brands. So as we all can see that Unilever is trying to promote a forestry practice which is more sustainable and in the mean time help to fight deforestation and climate change by the responsible of sourcing of these materials. (Anne Marie Mohan 2010) Another important part which is Unilever practice to protect the environment is the Unilevers water approach Sustainable Water Integrated Catchment Management (SWIM). (Catherine Dowdney n.d) The SWIN principle is developed with the help of UK sustainability organization. Water is vital to all sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and also human consumption. The SWIN principles include a useful approach to help Unilever and its partners to make sure that the community water partnership they engage in are effective and successful. Unilever had already adopted four villages along the Brantas River when the Clean Brantas Project was launched in July 2001.Unilever had also work corporately with the NGOs and other government agencies in order to further improve the process of sanitation system, tree replanting and environmental awareness. As a result of these hard works and initiatives, the river now can generate income for the villages through a small scale of fishing, farming and cu ltivation of Java Noni fruit crops for export. (Catherine Dowdney n.d) A Unilever plant in Ontario, Canada, has an ongoing campaign to improve the energy efficiency in order to cut down on the rising and unpredictable energy consumption. This plant in Ontario produces margarine and vegetable oils products which require a high energy expenditure costs. In order to achieve a 6% reduction of energy consumption per year, the plants energy teams has implemented and invest in a new technology called reverse osmosis (RO) system that would enable an improvement in the efficiency of the steam plant operations. (Cost savings and reduced environmental impact through lower energy and water consumption 2009) By changing the previous system to the RO system, the plant had consumed 13million gallons less municipal water and also 8% less natural gas. The plant also cut down the 240,000 pound volume of chemical into the sanitary sewer. The city of Toronto grants $50,000 incentive to the plant because RO system qualified for decreased water consumption and a $14,000 ince ntive grant from the local gas utility. According to Unilever, the project has lead to the company reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.6 million tonnes as well as cutting other greenhouse gases. (Cost savings and reduced environmental impact through lower energy and water consumption 2009) Unilever factories in South Africa had been converting the food waste into compose to be used in the communities and also reducing the amount of waste to be sent to the landfill. In the past all the food waste was send to the landfill and dumped there but now is helping to fertilize the agricultural products and generate income for the poor in South Africa. When the project triple R( reduce, reuse and recycle) launched in 2005, all the Unilever Foods factories in Pietermaritzburg and Durban deliver all their waste materials to the municipal compositing facilities to be further process and used. During year 2004 and 2006, the amount of food waste sent to landfill in Pietermaritzburg and Durban was halved and the cost of disposal was also decreased by a third. (Composting waste material for community gardens 2010) On the contrary, Unilever Brazil has devoted to recycle laminated packaging materials such as toothpaste tubes. It has start corporately working with other 5 small companies to collect and find a use for the materials. When food and drinking box, envelope and toothpaste tubes are manufactured, a small amount of plastic are cut off and removed. (Recycling consumer waste 2010) The waste material are collected and combined with a laminated consumer waste and compressed in a special oven. The materials can be shaped into different shapes and sizes. These substances can be used to produce or manufacture furniture and building materials. The first and ever product produce was food tiles, since then the materials has been used to manufacture products such as floor tiles, tables, chairs. Unilever Brazil had been using these materials to equip on the community projects. Unilever had been encouraging consumers to recycle their laminated waste packaging at the community recycling centers. (Recy cling consumer waste 2010) Concluding Remarks In conclusion, the social performance of Unilever in relation to the environment has been mixed. Although Unilever does good things to the environment, they also did some bad horrible things to the environment in India. As we all know the main objectives for all the business is to maximize the profit for their shareholders and stakeholders. So, what is the point that you take a good care of the environment but the company is making losses? If the company need to pollute it in order to make profit then just do it, but after that the company must remember to solve the pollution problems because it is the companys main income. The society will forget all the companys bad things when the company provides benefits for the public. I believe that Unilever corporate social responsibilities are balance. They may be the one who pollute but in the mean time they are also the person who clean up all the mess and put it into original state. ( 1683 words)

Nonverbal Use Of Gestures

Nonverbal Use Of Gestures People express themselves nonverbally with the use of gestures (Archer 80). For instance, doing an A-OK sign by making a circle with ones index finger and thumb is an expression of approval to most Americans. When former U.S. President Richard Nixon deplaned in Caracas, Venezuela in 1956, he flashed two A-OK signs with his fingers to a group of demonstrators and caused a riot to erupt. The former President was later briefed that the meaning of the A-OK sign to Americans was equivalent to raising the middle finger to Venezuelans (Moran, Harris, and Moran 63). Despite being a crucial tool in effective communication, the meaning of nonverbal signals or gestures that people apply varies across different cultures. Hence, gestures are often misinterpreted. The silent signals attached to nonverbal communication are revealing. They can tell us motives, emotions, and feelings such as indecisions, honesty, joy, frustration, approval, anger, and many more (Goman). Being able to catch the meaning of the tiniest gestures that people make is important in everyday interpersonal communication and especially in the business world. Knowing what offends and what does not, what is proper and what is not, is an edge that individuals must be equipped with if they are to succeed in this competitive world (Stolte). Now that we live in a globalized world, diversity is a reality that all face and cultural differences in gestures need to be understood if we are to promote harmonious and effective communication. This paper presents cultural differences in gestures and nonverbal signals that have been studied or revealed in literature. Different Gestures, Different Meanings Subtle nonverbal practices or actions need to be understood because they have the possibility of offending others. The use of fingers, hands, and feet The thumbs-up sign which equates to Great! in the U.S. has a different meaning in other countries. In Australia, Bangladesh and Nigeria, this gesture is considered insulting (Kohl). In South Asian countries, gesturing to someone to accompany him to where he or she is supposed to sit down should not be made using the index finger in order to point to the location. This gesture is applicable only to animals. The polite way to beckon individuals to their seats is to bow slightly and with the back of your hand, indicate the place which you wish them to sit (Goman). Hailing a taxi cab could get different results depending on how you raise the palm of your hand. When you hail a cab with the palm of your hand raised, Asian cab drivers will interpret it as an aggressive gesture. In order to hail a cab properly and politely, the back of the hand must be held at the thigh level (Jones 4). Another source of difference in interpretation is the use of fingers (Stolte). Generally, when one hold up two fingers in the air, this means two. While this may seem a universally true interpretation, it means differently in other countries. Germany and France interprets the holding up of two fingers as three; therefore, tourists who order beer using this gesture will always get three beers at a bar in Germany. In both countries, counting always starts with the thumb. Hence, when Americans and Canadian use two fingers to count (also to say Peace!), the Germans and French will count two by using their thumb and a finger (also interpreted as a gun). Australians indicate time to drink up by folding three fingers of the hand against the palm, leaving the thumb and little finger sticking straight up and out. The same gesture means six in China (Jones 4). Another source of confusion is how to use the fingers and hand to call the attention of someone (Moran, Harris, and Moran 64). For instance, calling the attention of a waiter or waitress is done differently in different countries. In North America, all you need to do is to say Miss, or Sir, raise a finger or tilt your head to one side to call attention. Snapping ones fingers is considered impolite and disrespectful. In China and other Asian countries, the same task is accomplished by clinking a cup or a glass with your ring or a spoon. In Middle Eastern countries, clapping hands achieves the same result. In Japan, calling attention requires extending your arm slightly upward, palm down, and fluttering your fingers. In Spain and Latin America, people extend their hands, palm down, and then rapidly open and close their fingers (Jones 4). Handedness is also a source of confusion. All Muslim countries and some Asian nations consider the left hand as dirty and sinister, hence, using the left hand in receiving or presenting objects is frowned upon. The left hands use is for toileting and hygiene and is hence considered filthy (Jones 4). When taking food or other materials, one must always use the right hand (Goman). In Muslim countries, meals are communal gatherings and people scoop ones food with flat bread from a bowl found on the center. People sharing the food always use their right hand in scooping viand from the bowl. In Asian countries, using the right hand is the polite way of interacting with others. It is so because the right hand is the more dominant and adroit hand. When presenting or receiving a gift or any material however, Asians generally use both hands to signal ones appreciation for the goodwill (Jones 2). Shaking hands does not have a universal meaning or interpretation. In fact, the shaking of hands is particularly Western (Kohl). When dealing with other cultures, the rule is to never assume that the person in front of you or beside you is willing to shake your hand. Another rule especially true in Islamic countries is to never shake a womans hand. Another rule is not to shake someones hand unless that person extends his or her hand first (Goman). This is why some Americans who offer to shake someones hand upon first meetings are considered invasive and arrogant (Early and Ang 21). There are also ways in which shaking hands must be performed. For women in Asian countries, shaking hands means touching each others hands in a gentle manner. Even among men, the bone-crushing grip that is used by Western men when they shake hands is frowned upon in Eastern countries and is considered aggressive. Men of the Middle East and Asia simply brush their palms, which most Western men may find effe minate but for the former constitutes superior breeding and proper manners (Jones 3). A pat in the head or in the back is not similarly interpreted in different countries. In the US, patting the head of a small child is interpreted as affectionate. This gesture would be frowned upon in Malaysia and other Islamic countries because they believe that the head, being the source of spiritual and intellectual powers of a person, should be untouched (Early and Ang 22). Moreover, how Americans slap each other in the back to express camaraderie, delight, or to offer congratulations is not proper in Asian countries. This gesture would be considered aggressive and improper (Jones 5). Gestures that use the foot also hold different meanings for different cultures. In most cultures, such as in Asia and the Middle East, the sole of the foot is filthy and should be covered. Exposing the soles of the feet is disrespectful and insulting. Arabs usually direct the sole of the shoe toward the floor and do not do the typical leg-crossing of Western men where the calf or ankle of the crossing leg rests on the thigh of the other leg (Goman). In addition, among the people of a Laos tribe, when a woman taps the tap of a gentlemans foot with hers, she is indicating her desire to have sexual intercourse (Jones 5). Eye Contact Eye contact is very important in the West. Avoiding direct eye contact as seen in the movies is one way of detecting whether someone is lying (Goman). Hence, in Western culture, anybody who fails to maintain good eye contact is considered suspicious (Kohl). Other interpretations of people who avoid direct eye contact are unfriendly, insecure, untrustworthy, inattentive, and impersonal (Moran, Harris, and Moran 63). Conversely, avoiding ones gaze is a gesture of respect and of knowing ones place in Asian culture (Jones 3). For instance, Japanese children are socialized in school to focus their gaze on someones tie knot or an Adams apple. In China and in Japan, adults lower their gaze when speaking to a superior as a gesture of respect. In Latin American cultures and some Africa cultures, such as Nigeria, prolonged eye contact from one individual of lower status is considered disrespectful (Moran, Harris, and Moran 63). Staring is considered very rude in America while staring in China and other countries just indicates mere curiosity over someone and is not considered impolite or disrespectful (Kohl). In England, people are taught to pay strict attention to a speaker, to listen carefully, and to blink ones eyes to indicate comprehension or that one is listening. Americans signal interest and comprehension by bobbing their heads or grunting. A widening of the eyes can also be interpreted differently. For example, take the case of an American and a Chinese discussing the terms of a proposed contract. Regardless of the language in which the transaction is carried out, the U.S. may interpret a Chinese persons widened eyes as an expression of astonishment instead of its true meaning of politely suppressed Asian anger. (Moran, Harris, and Moran 64). Touch Recent studies reveal differences across cultures on the amount of touch applied and whether touch is displayed in public or in private (Early and Ang 78). For instance, in Tonga, when couples or families are parted, they weave their arms around one another, pray, and chant. Europeans usually lock in an embrace or share a passionate kiss publicly. Koreans do not use touch publicly. Moreover, it is customary for Austrian men to kiss the hand of a lady recently met in a restaurant and to go far as walk her to her table. While some cultures may find this disturbing or offensive, this is considered polite manners in Austria (Kohl). Interpreting Gestures One of the most significant studies on gestural difference across cultures was conducted by Dane Archer in 1997. Basing his data on a documentary made on people from various parts of the globe taking U.S. English as a Second Language, he provided a detailed inventory of some of the most commonly misinterpreted gestures from cultures all over the world. While errors are almost always forgiven, misinterpretation of gestures often leads to irritation, annoyance, and frustration among persons communicating. Below is an inventory of the gestural differences (Archer 81): 1. Good-Bye = Come Here (Japan) 2. Good Luck (U.S.) = Screw You (Iran) 3. Good Luck (U.S.) = Boyfriend (Japan) 4. Screw You (U.S.) = I Dont Believe You (Uruguay) 5. Im Angry (Nepal) = You Are Afraid (Mexico) 6. OK (U.S.) = Money (Japan) 7. OK (U.S.) = Sex (Mexico) 8. OK (U.S.) = Homosexual (Ethiopia) 9. Killed/Dead (U.S. throat slash) = Lost a Job (Japan) 10. Homosexual (U.S.) = Henpecked (Mexico) Conclusion Globalization has also meant respect, tolerance, and understanding of diverse cultures. The use of body language, hands, eyes, feet, fingers, and touch mean something to one culture and differently to another. As communication becomes increasingly intercultural, the need to be informed of how nonverbal communication across cultures vary enable us to be careful of what we say, how we use gestures, and how we apply nonverbal cues in order to get our message across effectively.

Black Thursday :: essays research papers

The book ‘Hard Times’ takes you back to the early 20th century. This book also talks about one of the hardest times in American history. Hard Times talks about the causes of the great depression. This book gives original testimonies of people who lived during these hard times. Studs Terkel, prize-winning author and radio broadcast personality was born Louis Terkel in New York on May 16, 1912. Terkel attended University of Chicago and received a law degree in 1934. He chose not to pursue a career in law. Terkel credits his knowledge of the world to the tenants who gathered in the lobby of the hotel and the people who congregated in nearby Bughouse Square, a meeting place for workers, labor organizers, dissidents, the unemployed, and religious fanatics of many persuasions. In the roaring 1920s, the United States bathed in previously unheard of prosperity. Industry and agriculture alike profited from the thriving economy. Average income grew steadily throughout the decade and production soared. Levels of investment grew to new heights. However, the economy began to slow down in 1928, and the trend continued in 1929. Agricultural prices slipped, a result of production surpluses and a downturn in business activity. Despite this and other warning signs, patterns of investment continued much as they had in the mid-20s, giving little recognition to the economic slowdown. The stage was set for a major market correction. On October 24, 1929, dubbed Black Thursday, the stock market crashed. Investing froze. As a result, the national economy fell into an unprecedented period of depression. National income slipped lower each year from 1929 to 1932, and did not return to pre-depression levels until World War II. Unemployment became arguably the foremost problem of the depression. Hard Times talks such a major part of American History and was reviewed by many. Stud Terkel did such an excellent job when describing the depression and his accounts were so accurate according to the New Times, which states â€Å"In Hard Times, Studs Terkel captures the Depression in all its vast complexity, assembling a mosaic of memories as told by those who faced destitution as well as those who stayed rich†. The Saturday Review says, â€Å"It vividly illustrates the Depression's effect on those who lived through it, and shows how bitter memories can transform into a surprising nostalgia. The book ultimately serves as "a huge anthem in praise of the American spirit".

Dulce et Decorum est Essay -- English Literature

Dulce et Decorum est The poet reacts to the war by turning normal poetic language in to something that appears normal on the surface but in reality is tainted. The poet also breaks from normal poetry to show society the normal images of war. The ability to move the reader makes the poem work which aids the reader in to understanding the false propaganda. The poem is about soldiers in trench warfare and is a great example of writing graphically to show the horrific side of war yet being completely truthful. The poet does not withhold any information from the reader and conveys what it was like to fight in the War. The poet shows the pain in the poem. His tone, depression, lack of hope reveals his message. He uses long sentences and metaphor to show the tires soldiers. Picturing ‘old beggar under sacks’ tells us what war has done to them. It also tells us they are battle weary and scared of what is ahead of them. The use of similes in the first stanza allows the reader to understand the anguish of war. The poet is able to use words the words to paint a vivid and terrifying picture of trench warfare in the mind of the reader. The Hags is connected with the word beggers as they both outcasts in society. What's more words like beggers, hags and blood-shod shows what the war has done to the soldiers of war.. Through his use of vivid words and portrayal it makes us understand the effects of war and what it involves. The Stanza continues ‘Till on the haunting flares’, this suggests that the soldiers are possibly disturbed and are being haunted by the flares. The last line further shows the effects of war, the soldiers are deaf to the gas shells dropping right behind them. In the second stanza the poem begin... ...ers were once the ‘children ardent for some desperate glory.’ ‘Children’ here is used as the same reason as ‘boys’, who were brainwashed in to sacrificing their lives. The innocent are willing to believe in the lie about the war, but the war was totally different first hand hence the anger towards those who propagated dying for your country in being noble. ‘The old Lie’ the poet users a capital ‘L’ in lie. This puts the war in perspective of being glorious and patriotic. The readers attention does not wonder during the poem because of the poets consistent imagery. By the end of the poem the reader can fully appreciate the irony between the truth of what happens at the Trenches and the lie being told at home. The whole poem is contradictory to what was being spread with ‘Dulce et Decorum est.’ (It is a sweet and glorious thing to die for your country.)

French Revolution - Motives of Committee of Public Safety :: French Revolution Essays

Essay Topic: Discuss the motives of the Committee of Public Safety and the role they played in the running of France (up to 27 July 1794) "Anarchy within, invasion without. A country cracking from outside pressure, disintegrating from internal strain. Revolution at its height" This was the country the Committee of Public Safety ("The committee"), inherited and it was announced their mission by the Convention, to "create a viable (republican) state amid political turmoil" , by means of intimidation and ultimately terror, indeed the proclamation of "terror as the order of the day" so as to establish a peaceful, stable government for the introduction of the constitution. "The aim of constitutional government is to preserve republic. The aim of revolutionary government is to establish it" This was to be achieved by the passing of "laws and controls necessary to strike terror in the hearts of counter revolutionaries" . However as is revealed through their actions and policies, the Committee had ulterior motives, harnessing Jacobin ideals. During the years of terror, ending July 27th 1794, the Committee established themselve s within the running of France, by assuming control of areas of the economy, sections of war and munitions, as well as education and supply and provisioning as part of their bid for ultimate change. "laws passed went beyond national safety and revealed a Jacobin social vision for a secular and republican education system and a national program of social welfare" . The terror was their weapon, with which to establish and restructure areas of education, war and munitions, provisioning and supply, and ultimately change the very principles and traditions daily life relied upon. It became both their motive, and their mission, and it was part of their role which they played in the running of France. No longer was "The central purpose of the terror to institute the emergency and draconian measures necessary at a time of military crisis" , but rather to establish an official ideology from which would stem republicanism and other Jacobin ideals. The Committee were able to acquire control over the Convention and the industries of France, by relying on the support of Jacobin members of the Convention. "The national convention claimed sovereign authority, but in half of France its authority was denied." . It is for this reason that they were able to create a virtual dictatorship over France and introduce policies such as the policy of Suspects, and the Law of 22 Prairial, (June 10, 1794), which "suspended a suspects right to a public trial and to legal assistance".

Ancient Historians: Sparta.

Ancient historians reveal that Spartan society was something to be envied. (DISAGREE). Many ancient historians can agree that the Sparta, was an overall strong, well disciplined, sound governed, equal society, with hard working citizens and incredibly structured military forces. Some ancient historians, such as Thucydide and Plato, admired many aspects of the Spartans good order, and praised how well the Spartans system appeared to be working, whilst other historians, such as Aristotle, were extremely crucial of the Spartan system, and criticised their structure in many of their individual writings. Many claim Spartans system of government included monarchical, and democratic components, although it is acknowledged as being primarily oligarchy. The government structure consisted of, two kings, and unlike most kings, these two did not have absolute power as they shared the power with each other and they also had to answer to a council of elders, or the Gerousia. The Gerouisa was made up of 28 male citizens, all over the age of sixty, who once elected served for live.Below the Gerousia, was another assembly, the Apella. The Apella consisted of male citizens over the age of thirty. To complete the system of checks and balances, the Spartans created a judicial position called  ephor. At any given time, there were five citizens serving in this role. Ephors were citizens over the age of thirty. They were elected to serve one-year terms. Ephors possessed considerable clout. An ephor could bring charges against anyone in Sparta—including one the city-state’s kings.Whilst some historians believed this government system to be efficient, and a sure way to keep matters, and laws fair through-out Sparta, Aristotle disagreed with one judicial position in particular, the Euphors. On them he said ‘The Lacedaemonian constitution is defective in another point; I mean the Ephoralty. This magistracy has authority in the highest matters, but the Ephors are chose n from the whole people, and so the office is apt to fall into the hands of very poor men, who, being badly off, are open to bribes. Aristotle believed that electing men, of no status whatsoever, and giving them such a high state of power was unwise, as a man of no status would be more prone to corruption, including the accepting of bribes. He then states ‘There have been many examples at Sparta of this evil in former times; and quite recently, in the matter of the Andrians, certain of the Ephors who were bribed did their best to ruin the state’ Thus proving his above point, that the Ephors were more likely to be bribed, for their own wealthfare.Throughout majority of Greece, wives were acquired strictly for the production of legitimate heirs, providing food and were used for sexual pleasure. Husbands dominated and demeaned the women, and treated them as objects. Both wives and daughters of any citizen were excluded from all public and intellectual activities, they were kept inside and weren’t allowed to participate in leisure activities , receive an education, or eat as well as their brothers or husbands.Women could not inherit or own any land, and it was considered unwise to educate them. This wasn’t the case with women in Sparta, although they still had arranged marriages, they did not have the right to vote, and were honored most for their production of strong sons, the women still enjoyed status and rights that were exceptional in those times and were considered a scandal to the rest of the essentially misogynous ancient world. Aristotle, from rival Athens, seems to complain about the Spartan society throughout his writings. He is extremely critical of the Spartan system, especially of their emancipated women. â€Å"The license of the Lacedaemonian women defeats the intention of the Spartan constitution, and is adverse to the happiness of the state. † – Aristotle, [On the Lacedaemonian Constitution] In this statemen t, Aristotle believes that by making woman emancipated, this disadvantages men and gives women an opportunity to take advantage of the men, by manipulating and controlling them. .

1. Discuss Dr. Faustus as a tragedy Essay

autonomic nervous systemUnderstanding of Christopher Marlowes Elizabethan tragedy, Dr. Faustus, elicit be framed in scathe of the Renaissance school of thought and the Elizabethan tragedy, which takes a different turn on whatsoever points from the Aristotelian tragedy, for instance such as the Elizabethan tragedys necessity death of the sad hero. Dr. Faustus demonstrates the Renaissance philosophy that pits the dichotomy of heavy, angelic humanity against evil, corrupt humanity. Marlowes play also is a model of the Elizabethan tragedy.Marlowe constructed the character of Dr. Faustus to cook up within himself both characteristics of the Renaissance arrest of humanity as divinely good and hellishly evil. First, Dr. Faustus is presented as a pupil of all things including divinity, the highest Renaissance scholarly discipline. Then, Faustus is shown as dissatisfied with the limitations of humanity and grasping for innumerable knowledge, which is a Biblical allusion to crack and eve who ate of the Tree of Knowledge. Throughout the play, Faustus descends to disdain and lower planes of knowledge in his hobby for the power and omnipotence that comes from knowledge. At the beginning, Mephistopheles answers all Faustus questions scarce draws the line on talk of the earth, which flowerpot be seen to stand for astronomical and cosmologic studiesthe very studies that science is deeply come to in todayCERN Hubble SoHo etc). Faustus moldiness be content with merely mapping the universe instead of understanding it. Marlowe ultimately shows in Dr. Faustus the futility of the quest for ultimate knowledge and the needful end result of abandoning lesson wholeness for omnipotent knowledge.Dr. Faustus also represents a uncorrupted Elizabethan tragedy. First, the tragic hero has a shortcoming or makes an error in judgment that leads to his own doom. Its unassailable to say whether Faustus had a disgraceful flaw in his character or whether he was doomed by a haywire understanding that lead to a fatally disastrous error in judgment. on the whole along the way, Faustus has doubts and hesitations which speak for an integrity of his moral character. If he has a fatal flaw, it aptitude be that he did not aim the power of evil highly enough, that he thought that with omnipotent knowledge, he could shrive himself from the chains of evil he wrapped so blithely around himself. Adam and Eve also fell to the penalty from the lure of knowledge.Of course, quite often Faustus fatal flaw is said to be rapacity and irreverent disregard for goodness. One confidential culture to forming a literary stance on the question lies in examining his hesitations and second thoughts. In addition to this, the questions addressed in Marlowes play be nobel universal questions pertaining to the highest recite of considerations the meaning of life and death, the quest for knowledge, the individual power of of good and evil. In nurture accord with elizabe than tragedy, the play Dr. Faustus employs comedic sculptural relief through the presence of clowns that also acts as a means of giving information about the characters and the action of the play. The clowns in Dr. Faustus are Rafe and Robin. In Elizabethan tragedy, the clowns (rural, country simpletons who employ language accidentally) and fools (urban dwellers who play with language and convolute it intentionally for wit) generally replace the classic chorus that carried the task of moving the stratum along with information not performed on stage, but in Dr. Faustus, Marlowe employs both the Greek-style Chorus and Elizabethan clowns. Finally, in keeping with Elizabethan tragic form, Faustus gets himself in so deep, his tragic flaw or error in judgement is so aggregious that it leads ultimately and inevitably to his death, thus fulfilling the fate of an Elizabethan tragic hero. Since Faustus has overestimated what he can attain from an accord with match and since he underest imated the power of Lucifers evil, his ultimate end must be and is death even though he recognizes his mistakes and pleads for pardon.
